General Questions
What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is a nationwide team-based competition where students compete in various science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) events.
Who can participate in Science Olympiad?
Our team is a part of Division C, which is the high school division for students in grades 9-12. Our team is open to any student currently enrolled in Bronx Science.
How is Science Olympiad structured?
We typically bring 3 teams (A, B, C) to regional competitions and satellite (virtual) invitationals. Each team consists of 15 students competing in 23 events ranging from topics in biology, chemistry, earth science, to physics and engineering.
When does Bronx Science Science Olympiad take place?
Our season typically starts in the fall, with an interest meeting in September and initial diagnostics in the following weeks. Between the fall and winter season, we typically attend a variety of invitationals, but primarily prepare for our regional competitions in the winter, states in spring, and are aiming for nationals in May.
How are events chosen for students?
As a student-led team, we understand that students have unique and different passions in a plethora of subjects. Students are allowed to choose events that they are interested in, but will be systematically placed in events based on logistical decisions and diagnostic scores.
When does Bronx Science Science Olympiad meet?
We meet every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, after SGI (Small Group Instruction) in rooms 231 and 233. Members are not required to come every day, and the required time commitment will depend on how many events an individual joins.

Team & Leadership
How many students are in our Science Olympiad team?
We are the biggest academic team in this school, with a membership of over 150 students. We attend various invitationals and competitions throughout the year, and our Logistics team is working diligently to ensure that each student has the opportunity to compete given reasonable qualifications and commitment to the team.
Who runs the Science Olympiad team?
Despite being a student-led team, we are tremendously grateful to our faculty advisors — Ms. Womer, Ms. Ghaffar, and Mr. Powell — that support this team's administrative efforts. Without their guidance and support, we would be unable to achieve the success that we have had thus far.
Opportunities & Impact

Our team is dedicated to fostering the next generation of scientists and thinkers. As part of this team, students will develop crucial skills in collaboration, time management, technical skills, and a rigorous understanding of their specific events across a variety of STEM subjects.
Is Science Olympiad a good extracurricular for college applications?
We understand many students and parents alike come into our school with their eyes set upon college. We are fortunate enough to say that Science Olympiad alumni at our school have been accepted into the nation's most prestigious universities such as: Cornell University, Brown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania. Despite this history of success, we would like to note that Science Olympiad is not solely an extracurricular for universities. Many of the people on this team have a close relationship with Science Olympiad and more so with their peers and friends in the team, forming a close bond through competitions and weekly meetings.
